Breathe, yeah.

Monday, 7 May 2018

Life's been very hard recently. That's a funny notion in itself, as life is the most simplest of things.

You have it. We all have it. It’s the one thing we just “do”.

Yesterday, while I was at work and my boss glanced at his iwatch as it reminded him to “breathe”. Breathe. Breatheeeeeee. You can pay $30 direct debit for a Pilates class that teaches you how to breathe. You can do it wrong. Over red wine and cheap phõ last week my sometimes-wise (sometimes-equally-as-unstable) friend told me that people only smoke because they need to breathe. It’s true. It’s not often one goes out for “”air” without a cigarette in tow, and without a cigarette standing and breathing is more of a cry for help and onset of a heart palpitations. Smoking is a way of concentrating on breathing. You can take notice and feel the breath in, and out. You stop.

I tried breathing without smoking, it works just as well. Some call it meditating.

Mayan-Chocolate-Pudding-with-Salted-Caramel-Pistachio4

Cooler months equal comfort food. And more often than not the thought of comfort food leads itself to chocolate. In this case, chocolate pudding. The folks at The Artful Desperado have a delicious take on this with their Mayan Dark Chocolate Pudding which is topped with candied, salted pistachios.

Visit their blog for the complete recipe, and get baking!

Net-a-Porter can teach us a thing or two

Monday, 17 November 2014

A company that got it very right when it comes to the e-commerce territory is the online fashion store heavy weight Net-a-Porter. For brands that are entering the digital market, Net-a-Porter is one to take some tips from. And no I’m not just referring to their branded same-day service vans which can be spotted zipping around the streets of London and New York.

A. Service is Paramount

Consumers are now demanding that companies don’t merely serve them, but do so in a personalized way. Having grown exponentially over the last decade Net-a-Porter has not let this waver their excellent service. I'm talking seamless online ordering and processing, an easy returns policy, great customer care and perfectly packaged garments that can make any girl swoon. The picture of the Net-a-Porter black box wrapped with a dainty black and white ribbon is the Hermès orange box standard of fame. It's no wonder that their net worth has risen to the hefty heights of $3.4 billion.

B. Disrupting the Digital Landscape

In today’s digital environment, the consumer appetite for a high-quality customer experience is a given and, as a result, e-commerce is ripe for disruption through innovative customer service and experience. Net-a-Porter’s fusion of content and commerce is what led it to stand out from similar retailers.

The fashion juggernaut saw the importance of incorporating human talents alongside sending to print their own publication “Porter”- as a service to its beloved customer. Last time I was writing away about Net-a-Porter was because they were about to send Porter to the printers for the first time. As a side note I did purchase Porter for the first time the other week and found it to have the soul of a Myer catalogue, but that's another story.

C. Engage your target consumer

It's often said that today's customer is connected, empowered and impatient. This refers to the Net-a-Porter woman precisely. She is connected with the global fashion industry, actively uses Instagram and dreams of it all. Although the empowering of consumers has meant that companies are now in an arms race to build customer service and experience across a multitude of channels. Net-a-Porter has managed to create an organic, genuine and loyal following. Something that cannot be created with the click of the fingers. The customers are definitely both the backbone and driving force of Net-a-Porter, and it will strive to facilitate their every need. Net-a-Porter's constant creation of relevant content is what keeps it moving. They are industry leaders on both the instagram and twitter front's and their iPad "Notebook" app is a dream. Onwards and upwards.

“The most important thing, certainly today, is to follow the consumer. Technology and the consumer are changing so quickly.”

Words by Holly

Fast fashion is bringing me down.

Don’t get me wrong; I like a bargain as much as the next girl… but since when did affordability translate to homogeneity?

I’m not enjoying the glut of fraying hems and copycat designs on display in today’s department stores (here’s looking at you, Zara), or the way most people look like they own the same wardrobe. I want to buy clothes that I know has been made with love, not the sweat and tears of an underpaid factory worker in Bangladesh. Vivienne Westwood, the queen of punk, has issued us all the decree “Buy less, choose well, make it last.” Hear ye, hear ye. Let’s start investing in pieces we’ll still be wearing in ten years time.

Yes, fashion is about whimsy and fun, and occasionally making regrettable online purchases late at night, but hey… let’s slow it down a tad. A little love and personal style goes a long way.

Looking not a moment older from the day she left modelling, Gemma Ward is featured in Sunday Style's 12th October 2014 issue. Photographed by Beau Grealy, Ward is ticking all boxes as she gets back into the editorial swing.

This and that

This week has been a disjointed mix of binge viewing the entirety of the Made in Chelsea NYC season, piecing together my post-europe life which includes both searching for a job and for an internship, and testing some oh so nice products from Glasshouse Fragrance's La Maison Glasshouse collection. I also bought some white jeans, white jeans are still in right?

a. Glasshouse Fragrances "no. 5 fleurs musquées candle"

b. Glasshouse Fragrances "no. 3 gardenia inoubliable room fragrance"

In other news, house favourite Gemma Ward alongside her baby daughter cemented her modelling meets acting debut with Country Road.

In the world of good reads, I recommend you take a glance at this article where Bertie Brandes talks Love and other drugs, for i-D Magazine.

"If 21st century love is simply a chemical reaction, and life is routine and unremarkable, and consumer-capitalism has shaped our very definition of identity, then it’s hardly any wonder the most prominent relationship we have with drugs is one that promises total oblivion."

Tried & Tested // Grown Alchemist Lip Balm & Hydra Mist

Sunday, 12 October 2014

Grown Alchemist is an innovator's dream, a homegrown skincare brand rooted in biotechnology, not to mention their swoon worthy scents. There is definitely a form of extra pleasure when your humble lip balm is laced in the scent of watermelon and vanilla (in true lip smacker style). Making the Grown Alchemist lip balm a delicious handbag staple. For starters a "hydra mist" is something that I wouldn't ordinarily use very often, although with this product I find that it does come in handy when your skin feels in desperate need of a hydration kick- say on flights, etc. One spray and you are immersed in immediate hydration, with a dash of lime.

Top Shelf // Grown Alchemist

Thursday, 9 October 2014

Grown Alchemist is an innovator's dream, a homegrown skincare brand rooted in biotechnology. Not to mention the products coming in the most swoon worthy scents. There is definitely a form of extra pleasure when your humble lip balm is laced in the scent of watermelon and vanilla (in true lip smacker style), or the likes of pink grapefruit and lime. Delicious.

As an exfoliator, their "facial polishing" product is the perfect balance between a gentle product, although still rough enough to give your skin a good scrub and get the job done. Being lightly scented with pink grapefruit its nice and fresh, but nothing overtly overpowering. A "hydra mist" is something that I wouldn't ordinarily use often, although with this product I find that it does come in handy when your skin feels in desperate need of a hydration kick- say on flights, etc.
